We had a tour to an archeological dig called Chan Chan at Trujillo south of Salvaverry port where we are docked. This is still desert country which aids the archeological preservation.
The site had excavated 1 palace of the 9 in the complex. Many of the Larco Museo collection (visited yesterday) were discovered at Chan Chan.
Chan Chan was an example of pre-Colombian America, once served as the capital of the Chimu Kingdom, which reached the height of its power in the 15th century before falling under the Incas.
The massive adobe walls once were over 7m high but have since eroded. There is evidence of fresco decorated walls with marine theme pelican, sea lions.
The experience was less than savoury with piles of garbage everywhere and very poor quality housing.
