Today was real treat. We took a tour to the Larco Museum in Lima.

Lima is the capital of Peru located in the coastal region. Peru has population of 34m, of which Lima has 6m. 90% of the population is mestisto or mixed race-inca, spanish and asian. It was invaded by the Spanish in 15thC and eventually obtained independence 1831. They had a huge immigration program after independence and there was an influx of Chinese and Japanese workers. Since then there has been a series of revolutions, dictatorships and other turmoil and corruption.

It seems that they are now on a stable democratic path.

Back the Museo Larco. This is a privately owned museum with over 45,000 pieces. The Italian archaeologist Raphael Larco discovered and acquired these amazing collection from various dig sites starting 1923. When he asked the Peruvian Government for assistance, they replied, no thanks . Whatever you collect is yours. Quite an error. The Pre-columbian collection is so extensive, it is quite overwhelming. Some magnificent gold and silver displays. It is in remarkable condition due to the arid conditions of Peru. It was relocated into its current large mansion in the 50s and opened to the public once renovated. It also includes a separate gallery of Erotic pieces that were quite enlightening.

The restaurant looked absolutely amazing and would be something to aim for another time.

The other stops on the tour paled into insignificance after that. Museum of Contemporary Art and the Casa Luna collection of nativities.
