We were up and about early for a tour of arts and crafts of Bali.
First stop was a beautiful textile shop of magnificent silk and cotton batik. They also had ikat weavers on display. Ikat is a resist dye system that is extremely difficult, in that the change of pattern is determined by the change in thre pre-dyed thread. It sometimes takes 3months to complete 1 metre of the finest Ikat. Batik is a fine wax resist system with several dying processes. These traditional Balianese crafts are so beautiful.
Next stop: Celuk silver village the same as yesterday.
Next stop: Art studio which was unfortunately not of particularly good quality but of massive volume. Probably OK as decorator pieces. The buildings were an interesting amagum of linked courtyards.
then two other stops, timber carving and bamboo. Timber carving was incredible but not of interest and bamboo furniture much the same.
We had free drinks at Martinis and dinner with Dorothy at GDR.
