We arrived early at Puerto Montt and anchored in the bay. Chile is exteremely long and skinny (4270km long - would stretch from Us to Europe and contained to the East by the Andes mountains).
Puerto Montt is located in the north end of the Reloncavi Sound. It has an unusual heritage with a mass German migration of workers in the 1830s, mixed with the original Chiloe culture and the spanish colonialists. Many of the tribes submitted to the Spanish but the Machoupe kept fighting for 300 years.
We took a tour the German village, Frutillar which is located on the edge of Lake Llanquihue. The Lakes disitrict is ringed with volcanic peaks and is very picturesque.
Coffee shop below reminded us of Karen Huchendorf.
We enjoyed Mimi and Connie's company on the tour.
The next stop was a Puerto Valas, city of roses, with equal German influence but more touristy.
This part Chile is very productive agriculturally with fruits, wine, timber and seafood. What was so surprising was the number of Eucalypts that had established wild in the area. (failed euc. timber plantations) They also have Arocaria - Monkey puzzle tree- different to the Australian version.
There was a massive destructive earthquake of 9.8 in 2015.
In the evening we were treated to a special invite only for 6 Round the World guests plus 2 staff, by Oceania to the Privee dining room. It was quite a unique experience.
Connie had taken a photo of us enjoying coffee, then after her AI class she converted it to a Steam Punk version.
