We booked the famous Golden Circle excursion with Oceania in Reykjavik, an 8 hour tour around the highlights of Iceland.
Reykjavik is the world's most northerly capital and has a population of 140k. We didn't really interact with the city as we were straight on the bus. The name Reykjavik, meaning smokey bay, is derived from the Norse who in 874 saw Iceland rising from the misty sea and shouded with plumes of steam from near by hot springs.
We visited the Strokkur geyser and the Gullfoss waterfall, the Thingvellir rift and the giftshop. The giftshop was outrageously expensive. Additionally, there were 20 plus large buses at each location with the crowds really diminishing the experience.
The rift was interesting where the north American tectonic plate and the eurasian plate exist in the same zone: the Mid atlantic ridge is visible above sea level. Ie the two continents colide here.
We had a beautiful dinner with Jeanne and Dave at Toscana.
